Unique Birds

Besides its permanent “inhabitants”, the unique ecosystem of Milos grows in numbers at the turn of the seasons, as it hospitably welcomes a large number of feathery migrants… Regular visitors from the skies come to winter or land here every spring and autumn, selecting the island as their favourite station in their migratory course. Among them are rare species of herons that prefer wetlands and raptors that find shelter in the mazy coastal rocks and the steep slopes of Profitis Elias, in the underpopulated western part of the island… The birds come, leave and come back… And the experts observe them and trace the rare appearance of certain celestial species that dwindle, recording meticulously their presence and charming names: Eleonora’s Falcon, Little Bittern, Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Harrier, Whiskered Term, Osprey, Golden Oriole…
